Track skills: how to maximize tire grip
Driving pleasure comes largely from the performance of the tires, and the improvement of tire grip is the basic direction to improve handling. Especially in the racing field, such attributes will be magnified geometrically. No matter how great the performance of the tire is, the grounded part is probably the size of a credit card. Because of the small ground area, how to actively exert the maximum grip of the tire becomes the key to winning.
note:
The following driving methods are for the track, please do not try on the road!
1. Keep tire pressure and temperature consistent with factory standards
Some drivers often like to lower the tire pressure to achieve rapid temperature increase and increase grip, but the effect is often counterproductive! Because this kind of sports car tire with a strong cross belt layer must work under sufficient air pressure. Too low tire pressure will slow down the tire reaction, more serious will lead to excessive tire temperature and loss of grip.
2. Locking tires and excessive slipping will reduce tire grip
In a curve, as the dumping angle increases, the operation becomes more delicate. When the car approaches or reaches the maximum inclination angle, the tire's ground contact area is only a small part. At this time, any reckless sudden refueling, fuel reduction, and braking will destroy the balance between the tire and the road friction, and eventually lead to skidding. The experienced driver would rather use the tire grip before the limit than let it slip, because the tire will waste time to correct
3. Use introvert posture to turn
It has been proved in the two major rounds of competition in recent years that the use of exaggerated camber postures can effectively resist the centrifugal force in the bend. Under the same tire inclination limit, it has higher stability and faster cornering than other cornering postures. speed.
4. Constantly adjust the posture so that the tire maintains maximum grip
"In the corner, I constantly adjust my posture to find the best grip." This is a quote from a famous auto racer's autobiography. Indeed, in the corner, in addition to using the throttle, the racer will also adjust the body posture (forward or backward) to change the body load to achieve the best grip.
When braking in corners, the center of gravity of the car will be shifted to the front. At this time, the hips need to be seated as far as possible, and the rear wheels that are about to or have left the ground are pressed back.
When cornering, the car is at the maximum angle of inclination, and the force is applied to the vertical center of gravity of the tire, that is, the outer pedal is applied, and the outer leg also presses the body hard. All tires have a physical characteristic called vertical load. That is, the greater the force exerted vertically on the tire, the greater the grip of the tire wheel.
When accelerating out of a corner, the center of gravity of the car will shift to the rear. At this time, the speed of the body must be moved to the front to press the head to be lifted. The ultimate goal is to keep the front and rear wheels in contact with the ground for maximum grip. .
5. Overturn with throttle
Before entering the bend, purposely start to open the throttle slightly, and evenly, gradually increase the throttle to pass the bend. This is a secret decision that is constantly emphasized in the "Curved Bible", but it does not clearly explain why it is necessary to do so. In fact, the purpose of this is to maximize the grip of the tire.
